Be sure to ask, “What’s next?”
PBS’s “The News Hour with Jim Lehrer” won an Emmy award this week for Outstanding Coverage of a Current Business News Story in a Regularly Scheduled Newscast. The segment, with correspondent Paul Solman, focuses on Elkhart, Ind., which had an 18 percent unemployment rate following the closure of RV-maker Monaco.
The nearly 10-minute segment, called “The Faces Behind the Numbers,” highlights seven family members who are all unemployed and uses President Obama’s visit as a news peg. It also interviews the mayor, an economist and others to illustrate the problems in the city.
Today’s Tip: Don’t forget to ask, “What’s next?”
During my days at Bloomberg, it was called the “future” word. The PBS piece gives viewers a look at how the city is addressing the issue by following the mayor to current and pending projects. This addition gives viewers a look at how stimulus funds are being spent to boost employment. It also provides a rare moment of optimism.
