Look back in history helps explain a breaking story

Picture 19Alana Semuels of the Los Angeles Times writes about the growing popularity of freight trains.

She says Warren Buffett’s purchase in November of Burlington Northern Santa Fe motivated the story and gave the industry a boost.

She writes:

“China’s rise has given a new push to U.S. railroads, which have chugged their way back into the nation’s transportation future after losing ground for decades to the trucking industry.”

Today’s Tip: Look for sources with historical knowledge of your topic.

“I think what helped, aside from talking to analysts, was talking to people with history in the business, such as Henry Posner, who gave it context,” Alana says.

Aside from the historical context, Alana also gives readers great visual details of the freight yard. She says hanging out in the train yard helped provide that color.
