Small business, finance editor needed in New York

Federated Media is seeking an Executive Editor in New York for a web publication focused on small business and finance topics.

The job requires 10 years in journalism with at least 3 years in business.

John Battelle, Federated Media

In its JournalismJobs.com listing, Federated Media said:

While the overall publication is sponsored by a large corporate client, the executive editor “has editorial independence and is asked to meet the high standards that govern the best business publications. This person will report to the General Manager of the website.”

The job includes managing the overall editorial plan,

“including topic areas to be covered and styles of writing and presentation. Finding and recruiting qualified freelance writers and managing the relationships with them. Creating and maintaining an editorial calendar. Developing specific article ideas. Assigning and editing articles and ensuring that high-quality editing standards are met throughout the site. Supervising one full-time editorial assistant at the start and possibly additional staff in the future. Managing, and staying within, a budget for editorial costs. Designing and implementing editorial features and ways for readers to interact with the site and share its content with others. Monitoring statistics from the site and using that information, in a thoughtful and editorially appropriate way, to increase readership. Working closely with the General Manager and technical team to constantly improve the site, make it more appealing, encourage reader interaction and distribute articles through social-networking sites and other methods of amplification.”

The author-driven Federated Media was founded by John Battelle, former Director of the Business Reporting Program at the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley.
