Using LinkedIn to help write a profile

Todd Wallack of the Boston Globe profiled Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan prior to his appointment.

Todd talked to everyone from Moynihan’s high school coaches to former co-workers to write the chronological story. Todd says he contacted the librarian at Moynihan’s high school to get photos and contact information for former teachers and coaches.

“I didn’t want to just talk to people he knew him for one particular time,” Todd says.  For former co-workers, he turned to LinkedIn.

Today’s Tip: Use LinkedIn to find sources’ co-workers and former co-workers.

“It’s really helpful, particularly for business journalists,” Todd says. “It’s a useful tool for finding people.”

Todd says he used the advanced search function to find people who worked at the same company in the same city as Moynihan. He then contacted them via email.
