Super Bowl story uses research to support anecdotal sales stories

CNNMoney.com found a 2008 survey to back up the theory that athletic teams’ successes boost sales at local businesses.

Contributor Craig Guillot writes: ”A winning team can grow a region’s per capita income by as much as $100 per year, researchers Michael Davis and Christian End found in a 2008 study published in Economic Inquiry.”

The story also interviews owners of a restaurant and an audio-video store to illustrate the boost in sales.

Today’s Tip: Strengthen your anecdotes by looking for surveys or other data to back them up.

Gallup Inc.  has survey data on many topics. The Kaiser Family Foundation does several health-care surveys. California State University, Northridge, also offers a list of public opinion polls and surveys you can access.
