Two reporters win Reynolds Center scholarships to attend SABEW Conference
The Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism has awarded two $1,000 scholarships to two reporters to attend the conference of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers in Phoenix March 19-21.
Both winners intend to attend all four sessions of the multimedia track being offered by the Reynolds Center before, during and after the conference. Only a few spots remain in those sessions on producing a business news video in a day, looking natural on air, creating a business news podcast and shooting compelling business news photos
The winners are:
- Daniel Lovering, who worked for nine years as a staff reporter for international news agencies, mainly The Associated Press. He has reported from 11 countries on subjects ranging from business and technology to travel and the arts. Most recently, he worked as an AP business writer covering large U.S. companies in the aerospace, machinery and metals industries. Daniel is a graduate of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and Oberlin College. He was a Pew Fellow at Johns Hopkins University’s School for Advanced International Studies in 2000.
- Cory Schouten, who covers real estate, writes a blog and anchors daily television news updates for Indianapolis Business Journal, which was named SABEW’s best-of-the-best business weekly for 2009. Schouten launched IBJ’s first blog, Property Lines, in 2007. The blog has become one of the most popular features on the newspaper’s Web site and twice, in 2008 and 2009, was named best blog by the Alliance of Area Business Publications. The same group in 2008 awarded Schouten with the top prize for best body of work. Schouten and a colleague rotate responsibility for writing and anchoring business news updates that appear three times per day on the Indianapolis Fox affiliate. Schouten, a graduate of Indiana University, previously covered government news for the Sarasota Herald-Tribune and education at The Arizona Republic.
The deadline to apply for one of 10 SABEW scholarships, ranging from $299 to $1,000, to attend the conference is 11:59 p.m. March 5.
