Chicago-area news site is hiring Web producers
Who says there are no journalism jobs?
Business jobs are fairly plentiful these days. And today we noticed an ad for several Web producer jobs.
Shaw Suburban Media of Greater Chicago is looking for full-time Web producers to work on the 10 online news channels it produces.
In his JournalismJobs.com job listing, Chris Krug, Suburban Media’s vice president of news and media said:
“We seek talented professionals who respect the past, understand the present and, despite the challenges facing the news industry, possess a burning desire to be part of the future of journalism.
“We are seeking talented, highly motivated and self-directed online journalists who want to work in a positive, forward-focused environment to join our team as web producers. We have immediate opportunities available.”
Requirements for the job include that applicants know the basics of HTML, Javascript, XML/XSLT, PHP, Flash/Actionscript, and be squared away with MySQL/SQL databases.
Shaw Suburban Media produces these Web sites:

I would advise anybody seeking to work for Shaw to not expect to be treated with respect during the interview process.
When I interviewed for a position with this company in 2007, I was asked to drive from my home to the newspaper’s location on four separate occasions over the course of five weeks, rather than organizing most or all the interviews simultaneously. This is despite their knowledge that I lived nearly three hours from the site.
Then, after jumping through all these hoops, I did not receive a phone call or even the courtesy of a form letter to inform me that I would not be considered for the position. I never heard from the editor again.
As an aside, I find their products to be of poor quality, even by the standards of their relative resources.
