Strib seeks investigative reporter with CAR skills
The Star Tribune in Minneapolis is seeking an investigative reporter to expand its watchdog coverage through daily and weekly data reporting, according to an e-mail from CAR Editor Glenn Howatt sent to IRE listservs.
“We want someone who has strong CAR and writing skills, who is also an aggressive investigative reporter, and who likes to see their byline regularly on the front page,” the e-mail states. “This is not a projects job, or a newsroom service job. The person in this role would write often. The ideal candidate is a self-starting journalist who has excellent data-mining skills, someone who can deliver quick-hit, high-impact stories that matter to our readers.”
While this reporter would not necessarily cover business, he or she might do stories about “cronyism in contracts, mismanagement of government programs or wasteful spending by bureaucrats. A sophisticated understanding of database managers (Excel, Access, SQL Server ) and strong analytical skills are required. Knowing how to publish data on the Web is a plus. We are looking for someone with at least five years of daily newspaper experience and a track record of investigative work.”
To apply, please e-mail a resume and up to 10 stories to Investigations Editor Jeffrey Meitrodt, or mail to him at Star Tribune, 425 Portland Ave., Minneapolis, MN, 55488.
