Check out the schedule for our Covering the Green Economy seminar

Below is the agenda for our “Covering the Green Economy” seminar on June 28-30. This three-day specialized workshop will help journalists spot greenwashing, understand how to track stimulus money earmarked for “green” initiatives and get up to speed on eco-trends in a variety of industries.

The seminar’s jam-packed schedule and a list of top-notch speakers, including best-selling author and coal industry expert Jeff Goodell, will ensure attendees leave with a slew of story ideas and a firm grasp on the world of sustainability.

MONDAY: June 28

8 a.m.  - Continental breakfast

8:30 a.m. – Welcome and introductions(Andrew Leckey, president of the Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism and Reynolds Endowed Chair in Business Journalism and Dr. Christopher Boone, professor and graduate director at Arizona State University’s School of Sustainability.)

9 a.m. - Covering the green stimulus:  the challenges and rewards of reporting the biggest pro-green legislation (Russ Choma, an investigative reporter who focuses on climate and energy issues, transportation and stimulus spending for the Investigative Reporting Workshop, Nieman Watchdog and Grist.org.)

10:30 a.m – Break

10:45 a.m. - Greening the auto industry: hype or reality? (Jim Motavalli, a freelance environmental reporter and author who blogs for a variety of publications including The New York Times. He has a weekly syndicated “Wheels” column and also writes for NPR’s Car Talk.)

Noon – Serving up sustainability: a lunch conversation about eco-trends in the food industry (Steve Short, CEO of Atlasta Catering and Event Concepts and Colin Tetreault, director of sustainability management for Atlasta.)

1:30 p.m. – Covering the three corners of the environmental triangle: business, science and health (Susanne Rust, a Knight Fellow at Stanford University and a former award-winning reporter for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.)

3 p.m. – Group photo – Assemble on stairs to the Forum.

3:15 p.m. – Break

3:30 p.m. - Brown Roofs, Blue Dorms and Platinum Condos: emerging Trends in Green Building  (Bryn Nelson, a freelance science writer and editor with a special interest in technology, biomedicine, and ecology. Formerly an award-winning science writer for Newsday and a weekly columnist for MSNBC.com.)

5 p.m. –  Green tour of the LEED-certified Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication (David Gibney, western regional director, sustainable design solutions at HDR)

5:30 p.m. – Dinner

TUESDAY: June 29

8 a.m.  - Continental breakfast

8:30 a.m.The Shipbreakers: A step-by-step guide to taking your local environmental story global (Gary Cohn, a freelance investigative reporter, adjunct journalism professor at University of Southern California’s Annenberg School of Journalism and winner of the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting.)

10:15 a.m – Break

10:30 a.m. - Keynote: Covering the energy story: from Appalachia to geoengineering (Jeff Goodell, is a contributing editor at Rolling Stone and a frequent contributor to New York Times Magazine. He is the author of five books, including the New York Times bestseller “Our Story: 77 Hours That Tested Our Friendship and Our Faith.”)

Noon - Box-lunch chat with Jeff Goodell: Telling in-depth environmental stories

1 p.m. - Travel on light rail to Decision Theater at Arizona State University’s Tempe campus

1:45 p.m. - The solar connection:  The business impact of mapping a new energy source (Timothy James, is the director of research and consulting at the L. William Seidman Research Institute and a professor in the department of economics in the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University.)

2:45 p.m. – Break

3 p.m. – Sustainability and decisions: what you need to know and what you need to ask (Sandy Epstein, is the senior manager of strategic business development at Arizona State University’s Decision Theater, a research facility and decision lab for exploring and understanding sustainable decision making.)

4:30 – Break and travel to University Club

5 p.m. –  Social hour (University Club, Arizona State University’s Tempe campus)

6 p.m. – Dinner (University Club, Arizona State University’s Tempe campus)

WEDNESDAY: June 30

8 a.m.  - Continental breakfast

8:30 a.m.Tracking the toll of development on water from East to West (Craig Pittman, an award-winning environmental reporter at the St. Petersburg Times and the author of two books and Shaun McKinnon, an award-winning reporter who writes about climate and environmental issues for The Arizona Republic.)

10:15 a.m – Break

10:30 a.m. – After the spill: The future of big oil in a greening economy (Angel Gonzalez, Houston bureau chief for Dow Jones Newswires and former energy, venture capital and biotechnology reporter for The Seattle Times.)

Noon – Box-lunch chat with Craig Pittman: Got hold of a good story? Book it.

1 p.m. – Certificate presentation

About the Author

Kelly is the Reynolds Center's Senior Online Producer. She has worked as a reporter for several newspapers, most recently The Arizona Republic, and has been an adjunct professor at Arizona State University’s Cronkite School. She has a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Nonfiction from Goucher College and holds a degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from West Virginia University. Kelly also was a fellow at The Poynter Institute and a contributing writer for "Cancer Stories: Lessons in Love, Loss & Hope."
