‘Business angles for non-business journalists’ is aimed to help any reporter or editor think about the business angles in stories. ’Think like Google:  SEO and writing for the Web’ will help journalists understand ways to make sure their stories are not overlooked online.

‘Business angles for non-business journalists’

There’s no denying that business is a big news story these days…. financial reform, housing, jobs, the economy, recovery.  Even if you are not on a business desk, you write about topics that involve money, funding, finances, consumers.  There certainly is a business angle to every news story.  And a quick look at journalismjobs.org shows that newsrooms are hiring journalists with business experience.

This session will

  • help all journalists identify business angles in their stories (news, sports);
  • give you some basic tips for reporting on companies or finances;
  • help brainstorm ways to reframe stories for a business audience.

Think like Google:  SEO and writing for the Web

Web analytics changes the game for reporters. Even with circulation figures and TV ratings, we didn’t used to have data on our individual stories.  But we now know exactly how many people read our stories online.  If your work (stories, blogs) goes online at all, you need to know some basics about Search Engine Optimization.

This session will

  • help reporters and editors understand the Web and how search engines find online content;
  • explain some fundamentals of SEO and why journalists should care;
  • give journalists tips and tools for writing good headline and leads for the Web.
