RE: I fear that today there are far fewer opportunities for aspiring journalists to apprentice at the sides of experienced hands at well-established institutions.

I agree, and would like to propose a businessjournalism.org-sponsored solution: the ability for adults to compete for post-college internships.

I learned my craft -- government reporting -- solely through the serendipity of working alongside greybeards. Academia -> textbook fact-checking -> journalism fact-checking -> journalism. I don't know if it's better or worse than J-school. Learned investigative news/public records when this guy wanted a lackey ... and he happened to enjoy telling me how to do something right. One of my most valuable assets: the phone numbers of some laid-off/retired reporting superstars.

Is there any listserv for working business reporters like Capitolbeat for gov reporters? That latter's great for comparing to other states, story ideas, professional opinion/musings.

Anon:
We haven't seen any listserv for business journalists, but we have been developing something that might be a start. We hope to launch a Q&A on BusinessJournalism.org in the next couple of months.
Would you find that valuable?
