Academia -> textbook fact-checking -> journalism fact-checking -> journalism. I don't know if it's better or worse than J-school. Learned investigative news/public records when this guy wanted a lackey ... and he happened to enjoy telling me how to do something right. One of my most valuable assets: the phone numbers of some laid-off/retired reporting superstars. Is there any listserv for working business reporters like Capitolbeat for gov reporters? That latter's great for comparing to other states, story ideas, professional opinion/musings.
