Five simple (but great) video tips for new multimedia reporters

I was lucky enough to attend an excellent video class last week from my friend, Ihosvani “Geo” Rodriguez. Geo was a print reporter who made a leap to multimedia reporter a couple of years ago, so he has a great grasp on how to transition. If you’re new to video, there are a few basic [...]

How’s the recovery? Miami Herald’s Economic Time Machine tells us

Kenny Malone and Doug Hanks found a way to take us back in time: They created an Economic Time Machine for The Miami Herald. The ETM, as they call it, is an Excel-based database that compares current economic data to past levels put them into perspective. (They’ve heard all the “Back to the Future” jokes already.) Matching about 8,000 bits of economic data to pre-recession levels allowed them to put the state of the current South Florida economy as being about the same as in April 2002.

Use wage and income data to round out recovery, jobs stories

Corporate earnings season is in full swing and it’s sort of overshadowed another kind of earnings information that likely will be of far greater interest to readers:  Government data on personal income and wages.   In addition to recent reports, a huge release from the Bureau of Economic Analysis is due out Thursday (April 21) [...]

Using Slideshare to troll for story ideas

I know people sometimes look down their nose at PowerPoint presentations. Yes, they can be deadly. But I’ve got in the habit of checking out presentations featured on Slideshare, a site where people can store and share presentations of all types. Hayley V. Fuller, a Slideshare user from Kingston, Ontario, Canada, posted this slideshow about [...]

Pulitzer winner: start with a detailed timeline and fill it in with reporting

I’ve featured many of the Pulitzer-winning, business-related stories in this blog during the past year. The one I hadn’t read — detailing what happened to a fishing boat that sank off Cape May by Amy Ellis Nutt at The Star-Ledger in Newark — kept me on the edge of my seat with its details, fast pace and storytelling techniques, such as foreshadowing. It won the 2011 Pulitzer for feature writing.
