From objective to bullish: Covering sports for a college

Poynter's Romenesko points out a good read out of Harrisonburg, Va., today.

Colleges are hiring official sports writers.

Dustin Dopirak writes about how more newspaper sports reporters are jumping to college athletic departments. "We wanted to create a position that informed our fans directly," said U.Va. executive associate athletic director Jon Oliver.

Now, that sounds like traditional PR, but the story is worth reading. There's more to it. Hiring sports writers is a trend that began with the pros. Sites like MLB.com and NFL.com employ beat writers for each of their teams.

Is this sports journalism or the impression of journalism? These writers are not going to write controversial stories that their employers don't want them to break.

As newsrooms downsize, travel becomes limited, and journalists redefine themselves, what happens to objectivity? What do the fans, sports customers, want?

What happens to stories about the business of sports?

The Reynolds Center for Business Journalism will be hosting a workshop on covering the Business of Sports March 10, 2010, in Indianapolis.

Stay tuned.

Jumping in to localize the Whole Foods story

Executive crusades can be risky and distracting. That's certainly no surprise to Whole Foods CEO and founder John Mackey.

Investors, unions and customers have all expressed ire at the political views he expressed in The Wall Street Journal on Aug. 11.

Mackey presented a free market alternative to Obama's health-care reforms, adding that Americans do not have an intrinsic right to health care, an idea at odds with the company's well-heeled liberal clientele. (One question I haven't seen explored yet is whether Mackey is happy to make a shift to a more mainstream customer base.)

Stakeholders across the board are questioning whether Mackey is the right man to run the company, which ironically has a reputation for being a progressive company that treats its employees well.

And reporters are scrambling to find ways to localize the story as it moves from Wall Street's concerns to Main Street protests.

Protests in New York:
Single-Payer Health Care Advocates Picket Whole Foods

Investors chime in:
Motley Fool: Should Whole Foods bag its CEO?

Unions vote no confidence:
Unions join Whole Foods boycott

Damaging the image:
Brand Image: Did Mackey Really Hurt Whole Foods? (WFMI)

Investors want CEO out:
CtW Investment Group Calls for Whole Foods Board to Remove Chair and CEO John Mackey

Don't forget, reporters can get a lot of great information from other reports, but if you're going to try to localize an ongoing story, be careful about jumping in late in the game. Go back to the source. Do your own reporting.

The op-ed that started all this:
John Mackey: The Whole Foods Alternative to ObamaCare

You probably don't want to wait until the company's Whole Story chimes in.

Journalists should be interviewed regularly

One thing I love about the Internet is that there are no borders. This blog from Canada caught me eye today.

John Longhurst, of the Canadian Journalism Project, finds that being interviewed can help reporters understand how sources feel.

His post:
All journalists should be interviewed regularly.

As Longhurst puts it, "those who do the interviewing likely seldom think of how it must feel to be at the other end of the process."

He came up with this idea as he interviewed Margo Goodhand, The Winnipeg Free Press editor, who he described as uncharacteristically nervous when they sat down.
When pressed, Goodhand admitted this was only the second time she had been interviewed herself.

"It felt absolutely bizarre," she said later.

We should all feel so bizarre sometimes.

Finding stories in the drive-thru line at McDonald's

Social Media strategy consultant Jay Baer tells the story of an employee who exceeds expectations in today's post: Social Media Excellence and a Side of Fries

He tells the story of Mary Moss, who works at a McDonald's restaurant in Chandler, Arizona. At her drive-thru window, Mary stands out as someone who makes sincere connections. She remembers her customers and cares about their lives. As she tells it:

“I think a lot of people just expect quick service, and it surprises them when they get a certain amount of personal attention. Sometimes all it takes is a smile and a quick compliment to turn their day around.”

Mary's unique style with the headset has attracted a following.

One fan started an official Facebook page: I love Mary @ McDonalds

And she caught the attention of her local paper, The Arizona Republic:
McDonald's drive-thru worker gains online fan base

McDonald's is not local. But the way Mary Moss brings heart to her McDonald's job is certainly a good local business story.

A big lesson here is that you can find stories anywhere. Reading blogs, checking Facebook or while stopping by for a burger and fries.

What does post-newspaper journalism look like?

What would happen if a major U.S. city was suddenly without a daily newspaper?

On the Media’s Bob Garfield posed that idea, which seems increasingly possible these days, to CUNY Professor Jeff Jarvis.

Jarvis, who made the rounds this weekend after his appearance at 'Of the Press: Models for Preserving American Journalism,' a three-day conference at the Aspen Institute, shares his thoughts on his BuzzMachine blog.

Among the topics discussed last week in Aspen: ways to make content profitable again, free vs. paywall models, and how the news industry is in for several years of experimentation as it develops new business models and experiments with new revenue opportunities.

On Editor & Publisher, Steve Outing shared highlights from the conference: The Future of News, Viewed From Aspen's Rarefied Atmosphere.

The Aspen event was live-streamed and can still be seen at The Aspen Institute's site.

You can follow Jarvis as he continues to discuss his ideas on Twitter:
@JeffJarvis

And it was just announced this morning that Jarvis will be taking his thoughts to a world stage at 'Is World Journalism in Crisis?' in England in October.

The seven qualities of the 21st century journalist

Joe Grimm of JobsPage.com posted an article today on a talk by Owen Youngman, a Knight Professor of Digital Media Strategy.
At a recent discussion with Northwestern’s National High School Institute journalism students, Youngman talked about the basic qualities he believes all 21st century journalists will need in order to survive. The seven traits he listed as invaluable:
  • Accuracy
  • Self-Awareness
  • Numeracy
  • Appropriateness
  • Business Savvy
  • Audience Awareness
  • Adaptability
Numeracy is a trait we at the Reynolds Center believe all journalists should have because of how essential it is in a variety of reporting beats. From the article:
"To be accurate, we have to understand and handle numbers better. They are embedded in almost every story we do and they become even more important in an age when so much of what happens online is data driven."
To improve number-literacy, Youngman suggested the book "A Mathematician Reads the Newspaper". We suggest some of our short online tutorials for brushing up on basic math and business information. We also recommend this article for budding business journalists.

Journalists can build a brand like a rock star

Sure they can!

In the top story on BusinessWeek's Management page this afternoon, Dan Schawbel writes about how anyone with an Internet connection and some ambition can develop their own marketing platform.

Schawbel points to the results of a study conducted on July 20 by Wetpaint and the Altimeter Group which shows that the most engaged brands on social media saw their revenue grow by 18%.

His examples are celebrity brands: Kathy Ireland, MC Hammer, Gary Vaynerchuk. All of them quickly saw impact on their brands after using Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and video blogs.

Journalists can do the same thing. Of course, revenue is counted not by sales but by loyalty, readers, viewers, story tips and, perhaps, longevity in the business.

  • New York Times' Brian Stelter has 11,750 followers on Twitter.
  • All Things Digital's Kara Swisher has 116,000 followers and drives a lot of traffic to her All Things Digital blog, which is part of The Wall Street Journal Digital Network.
  • Michael Banovsky, who covers the auto industry in Toronto, has nearly 4,000 followers.
  • And Miami Herald tech reporter Bridget Carey has 1,800 followers.
All are respectable business journalists, but none are household names. They would not expect to attract followers in the numbers that Oprah or Ellen or Ashton would.

But they are just four of hundreds of business journalists using social media to develop their brands and to reach an audience they may not have had before.

Whether you are a freelancer or get a regular paycheck, you are your brand. And you can always take lessons from the stars. It's Hammer time.

Track news trends through social media

The International Journalists Network posted an article today by Amy Webb on how to use social media to stay updated on breaking news throughout the day as well as follow major news trends.
For Twitter, Webb suggests:
  • Searching tweets through keywords related to news topics using Monitter.
  • Using TweetMeme to see the most popular links on Twitter and Twitturly to find the most-shared URLs. During breaking news, links to breaking news articles become more prevalent on both sites.
  • Looking at Hashtags.org for a list of all the different hashtags on Twitter, many of which are based on keywords or phrases that can be related to news subjects.
Webb also recommends employing Google Trends to search for multiple keywords, allowing you to see how many people are Googling a particular subject. Using the site to view the most popular Google search trends by country can also be helpful, she says.
We have also found Google Alerts, a free service by Google that allows you to get email digests of Google results on specific keywords, handy for keeping up on specific topics and developing news.
Wikirage, another site Web suggests, claims you can "Monitor the Hive Mind through Wikipedia Edits." The site lists which Wikipedia entries have received the most edits sorted by hour, day and month. When breaking news occurs, an entry about the event will often become the most edited.
A Web site good for finding news trends on television is SnapStream, according to Webb. The site graphs keywords said on U.S. television and highlights which topics are growing or declining in popularity.
