Work for Bloomberg in Mexico

Bloomberg is looking for a speed editor to work at its bureau in Mexico City.
The speed editor will edit breaking business stories on company earnings, stock market reports, mergers and acquisitions. The editor will also polish general-interest news. The selected candidate will be expected to read news releases in Spanish and English quickly, pulling out the essential financial information and transforming it into headlines.
Applicants should have:
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Work experience in a real-time news environment.
  • A strong understanding of business, financial markets and the economy.
  • Knowledge of Mexico's recent history, economy, businesses and financial markets.
  • Outstanding math skills.
  • Grace under extreme pressure.
  • English fluency.

Design for Bloomberg

Bloomberg L.P. is looking for a full-time senior designer in New York to manage the User Experience Design for its Web site.
The designer will be expected to construct "
effective information architecture for a content-rich site." Some of the designer's responsibilities will include:
  • Building templates and interactive features.
  • Creatively implementing editorial ideas.
  • Monitoring design consistency.
  • Coming up with new ideas for improving the Web site's architecture, content presentation and functionality.
Candidates should have a bachelor's degree and a background in interactive and visual design projects. Applicants should be able to hand-code and have a strong grasp of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, DreamWeaver, Adobe Photoshop, QuarkXPress and Illustrator. They should also have knowledge of cross-browser and cross-platform issues. All applicants will be required to submit samples of their work. Past work at large media organizations is a plus.

At least 250 biz journalism jobs lost this year

In a new SABEW post, Chris Roush tallies that at least 250 business journalism jobs have been lost in 2009 so far.
Included in the list of business publications that made staff cuts already this year is Bloomberg, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the Chicago Tribune and the San Diego Union-Tribune.
From the article:
"During the first six months of the year, more than 250 business journalists lost their jobs due to media closings, layoffs or newsroom buyouts, according to an analysis of the industry by the Carolina Business News Initiative at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill."

Bloomberg mag to expand in print and online


An expansion is in the works for Bloomberg magazine's print and online efforts, according to reports from the Financial Times.
The story says that the move comes after several recent key hires, including the new publisher of Bloomberg Markets magazine, Michael Dukmejian, who spent 26 years at Time Inc. Norm Pearlstine, the former Time Inc editor in chief, and Andy Lack, the former NBC News president, were also hired to help expand the reach of the company's editorial output beyond the traditional Bloomberg terminal.
From the story: “I think the magazine and the company are in a unique position today to do the kind of business journalism today that a lot of companies with strained resources aren’t doing,” Mr Dukmejian told the FT.

OC Register biz reporter heads to Bloomberg

The OC Weekly reports that John Gittelsohn, a business reporter at the Orange County Register, is leaving the paper for a job at Bloomberg News in New York City.
The report says that Gittelsohn will cover national real estate topics for Bloomberg. His last day at the paper will be June 26.
Gittelsohn joined the Register as a education reporter, but is more recently known for his standout business coverage in South California.
From the story:
John came to the Register from the Sun Sentinel in Florida to cover K-12 education. He later reported OC's Asian communities, traveling to Vietnam and China on reporting trips, state government, including covering Arnold for two years in our Sacramento bureau, and, most recently, reporting on Orange County's rich and infamous, such as indicted Broadcom billionaire Henry T. Nicholas III.

NYT ad revenue way down

Bloomberg reports that The New York Times Co. listed a 27 percent drop in first-quarter advertising revenue, expanding its net loss to $74.5 million.
From the story:
Times Co. cut jobs, slashed pay, halted its dividend and sold assets to help preserve cash after ad revenue slipped 13 percent last year. It’s seeking to sell its minority stake in the Boston Red Sox baseball team and is negotiating additional pay and job cuts with unions. “It’s clear from these results that it’s a very, very bad environment for newspapers,” Edward Atorino, a New York-based analyst at Benchmark Co., said in an interview. “There’s no sign of relief.

Partners: International Herald Tribune and Reuters

The International Herald Tribune's financial section will have a updated feel next month, changes that stem from a new partnership with Reuters.
The daily business section of IHT.com and the print editions will be renamed Business with Reuters and will publish news from both organizations, according to reports from the International Herald Tribune.
The agreement replaced the papers' partnership with Bloomberg, which since 2002 has worked with the International Herald Tribune's financial sections.
Executive Editor Michael Oreskes said the project could spark even broader cooperation in the future.
