Write for MIT's news office

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology News Office is looking for a full-time reporter at its office in Cambridge.
The journalist will cover the business, humanities and arts beat. He or she will cover MIT research and teaching through spot news, profiles, trend stories and features. The reporter will be responsible for creating three story ideas and writing at least three stories a week, each around 600 words long. The writer will also propose multimedia to accompany stories.
Applicants should have a bachelor's degree and at least five years' experience in a news environment.

SABEW names Watson executive director

Warren Watson is the new executive director of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, an organization that serves business and financial journalists.
Watson is a veteran newspaper editor, the former vice president and acting co-president of the American Press Institute and most recently, the directly of a non-profit initiative for journalism high school students, J-Ideas, which is housed at Ball State University.
He replaces Dave Beal who has served as the organization's interim director since last fall.

Benefit for business journalism & SABEW

Paul Steiger (former Wall Street Journal managing editor and ProPublica founder) and Larry Ingrassia (New York Times Business editor) are hosting an event to benefit business journalism and the Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW).
The event will raise funds to aid displaced business journalists as well as train business journalists in digital media.
With the money raised, SABEW's plans to remake its job listing site, create a market for freelancers to find work, establish a mentor program for displaced journalists, teletrain journalists on multimedia and business journalism, offer scholarships to attend conferences and training, and revamp its website.

Time: Thursday, May 28, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Price: The event is free but donations to the SABEW Fund for the Future are requested as SABEW must raise $50,000 by August to qualify for a matching amount from four foundations.

Sun cuts include Kohn

The Baltimore Sun layoffs include Bernie Kohn, investigations editor and former president of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers.
Kohn was previously the assistant managing editor for business before The Sun shuttered its business section last year.
The cuts equal about a quarter of the paper's editorial staff.
