Business journalists win APME awards

Business journalists took some of the top awards for the Associated Press Managing Editors Association 2009 Journalism Excellence Awards.
The Seattle Times' "Culture of Resistance", a piece the Reynolds Center interviewed business journalist Michael J. Berens about in June, received a Public Service Award from the APME. Berens and other Seattle Times staff exposed lacking infection control in Washington hospitals.
The Lexington Herald-Leader also won in the 40,000 to 150,000-circulation category for investigating how the Blue Grass Airport, the public library, the Kentucky League of Cities and the Kentucky Association of Counties were spending tax money. Make it Great blogger Rosland Gammon interviewed Sharon Walsh (the enterprise/projects editor heading the project) about the investigative process in July.
Winnners were selected in July at a meeting of APME's association's board of directors. The awards will be distributed during APME's annual conference Oct. 28-30 in St. Louis.

2009 Loeb Award winners announced

The Loeb Awards, established in 1957 by the late Gerald Loeb to recognize journalists who make contributions to the understanding of business, finance and the economy, held the 2009 awards banquet last night, where winners were announced.
The awards include two special awards for career contributions: the Lifetime Achievement Award, which was given to Bill Emmott, former editor-in-chief of The Economist; and the Lawrence Minard Editor Award, which went to Lawrence Ingrassia, business and financial editor of The New York Times.
There were awards given in 12 additional competition categories such as online, breaking news, magazines and beat writing.

Biz Journalist wins Livingston Award

Wall Street Journal business reporter, Kate Kelly, is one of three winners of the $10,000 Livingston Awards for Young Journalists for 2008 work.
Kelly won the award in the national reporting category for "Lost Opportunities Haunt Final Days of Bear Stearns," her three-part series on the collapse of the Bear Stearns company.
The Livingston Awards are limited to journalists under the age of 35 and are awarded in local, national, and international reporting. 
The 50 finalists for this year's competition were widdled down to three and winners were announced today by Charles Gibson of ABC News, Ken Auletta of The New Yorker and Anna Quindlen of Newsweek today.

Deadline for ICFJ personal finance for Hispanic journalists June 8

The application deadline for International Center for Journalists' two online personal finance training courses is now June 8.
Hispanic journalists and U.S. journalists covering Hispanic issues in the U.S. and Puerto Rico can take the courses in Spanish or English from June 15 to September 14.
The courses will teach journalists about credit, lending, housing, mortgages, retirement planning and investing, and other issues.
Three participants will receive a McGraw-Hill Personal Finance Award and cash prizes of US$2,000, US$1,000 and US$500 at the end of the course. The winners will also participate in the McGraw-Hill Forum for Hispanic Financial Literacy.

Business writer wins Mirror Award

Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications gave a "People's Choice" award in the third annual Mirror Awards competition to Fast Company's Clive Thompson, the school announced today.
Thompson won the People's Choice category of Best Single Article, Traditional Media for his piece, "Is the Tipping Point Toast?", a story on marketing industry techniques.

Nieman Foundation selects biz journalists

Business journalists are among the 24 journalists selected for the Nieman Foundation for Journalism's 72nd class of fellows.
Announced Tuesday, the class of 2010 includes Wired magazine contributing editor, Jeff Howe who will examine crowdsourcing and its use in the development of sustainable journalism models.
Other fellows focusing on business issues will research topics like the economic impact of Latin American immigrants into the United States and the interconnection of the economy with life issues like foreign policy and health care.

Phx biz journal wins awards

The Phoenix Business Journal clinched four Arizona Press Club awards.
The paper reports the Journal took first place for Best Use of the Web, small and medium publications. Also, Staff Photo Editor Jim Poulin won second- and third-place awards for Portrait/Personality photography, and reporter Chris Casacchia won a third-place honor for Sports Reporting on his story, “Arizona firms in China go for gold with ’08 games.”

Finalists for the Loeb awards in business and financial journalism

Finalists of the 2009 Gerald Loeb Awards for Distinguished Business and Financial Journalism were recently announced along with the winners of the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Lawrence Minard Editor Award.
Bill Emmott, former editor-in-chief of The Economist who retired in 2006 after 13 years in the position, received the Lifetime Achievement Award. The Lawrence Minard Editor Award went to Lawrence Ingrassia, business and financial editor at The New York Times.
Finalists for the awards include:
* Robert O’Harrow Jr. and Brady Dennis for “The Crash: The Rise and Fall of AIG” in The Washington Post
* David Heath and Christine Willmsen for “The Favor Factory” in The Seattle Times
* David Leonhardt for “Obamanomics” in The New York Times Magazine
