American City Business Journals gets new CEO

According to Editor & Publisher, Whitney Shaw will be taking the place of his late father as chief executive officer and president of American City Business Journals, with his brother Kirk Shaw acting as vice president and chief financial officer.
The announcement was made on Monday. Whitney Shaw previously presided as ABCJ's
senior vice president and president of ACBJ's sports publishing division.
Ray Shaw passed away July 19 after complications from a bee sting. He purchased ABCJ in 1989 and served as its chairman for 20 years. The news organization has 40 different print business journals and has published over 1.25 million business news articles since 1996.

Dow Jones plans expansion in India

Editor & Publisher reports that Dow Jones, parent company of The Wall Street Journal, is doubling its investment in its operations in India.
From the story:
"India is an increasingly important market for us," said Bruce MacFarlane, vice president and managing director, Asia Pacific, Dow Jones Enterprise Media Group. "The opportunities are significant and will only continue to grow as the Indian market becomes more and more hungry for high-quality business news and information."

MSNBC President: Ratigan's move will not hurt CNBC's ratings

In his latest column, MarketWatch commentator Jon Friedman examines whether Dylan Ratigan's move to MSNBC could pull viewers away from CNBC. Ratigan left CNBC in March. At that time, he was the anchor of "Fast Money" and co-anchor of the "Closing Bell."
MSNBC President Phil Griffin does not believe CNBC's ratings will suffer as a result of the move. Ratigan seems to agree. "[W]e're going to do a show about policy and politics. I think people watch CNBC (for news about) managing money. I'm not going to talk about money," he said.
Friedman thinks MSNBC made the right call by bringing Ratigan on board. But he says Ratigan does have some work ahead of him.

Ratigan will have to establish himself as a journalist who can appeal to a wider range of viewers, not merely financial-news junkies. If he proved to be successful, MSNBC would maintain its momentum and have a powerful news-reporting platform on Wall Street.

Colleges work to trim costs

Officials at Harvard University want students who dream of going to their school to know it's an affordable option.
But as students struggle to pay for the rising cost of college education, places like Harvard may seem unattainable.
That's why Harvard's president, Drew Faust, recently announced a plan to overhaul the school's financial aid policies.
He wants to make his university more affordable for middle income families through additional grant aid, eliminating student loans and the removal of home equity from the financial aid qualifying process.
Harvard is the latest school to offer a relief plan for students.
This past weekend, Duke University pledged a series of changes to its financial aid process that will ease the burden on the middle class.

CBS gets into the resturant biz

CBS Corp. is partnering with New England Patriots’ owner Robert Kraft to establish a new station-themed restaurant.
CBS announced today the plans for CBS Scene Restaurant and Bar, a 15,000 square-foot restaurant scheduled to open next fall nearby the Patriots' Gillette stadium in Foxborough, Ma.
The restaurant will feature 130 high-definition televisions programmed with CBS shows. It will anchor Patriot Place, a 1.3 million square-foot retail and entertainment hub at the stadium.
With its new venture, CBS Corp. is entering the restaurant business beside stations with established restaurant chains like ESPN and FOX.
"There is no greater franchise right now in the NFL than the New England Patriots, and there is no better or higher rated broadcaster than CBS Sports, which has become network televisions No. 1 supplier of big ticket events like the NFL," said Leslie Moonves, CBS Corp. president and chief executive officer, in a release.
"The CBS Scene restaurant and Bar represents a terrific opportunity to bring these forces together to launch a first-of-its kind dining and entertainment destination at what promises to be one of the Northeast's most popular attractions."
