WSJ story on SXSW shows it’s OK to talk to strangers on the street

I didn’t attend South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, but after reading Katherine Rosman’s article in The Wall Street Journal, I felt like I did.

This is a feat because Katherine says her editor gave her free rein on the angle to take – which can sometimes be a blessing and a curse. With no direction, she focused on doing man-on-the-street reporting at the event, which began as music festival 1987, but added an interactive portion in 1994. She reports, “More than 17,000 people are expected to have attended the five-day interactive conference,” held March 9-13.

Craig Harris of The Arizona Republic became the first recipient of the Toner Prize for Excellence in Political Reporting from Syracuse’s Newhouse School for an eight-part series looking at abuses in the state’s pension plans.

Craig had to survive being sued by the Arizona State Retirement System — which sought (unsuccessfully) to get a judge’s approval to deny the paper’s public information request — and castigated (erroneously) by retirees for requesting certain data.

Nursery and garden centers are a $26 billion a year [...]
