Investigating how EMS companies took Medicare for a ride

Terri Langford at the Houston Chronicle produced a two-part series looking at how easy access to Medicare dollars led to a booming ambulance industry in Houston’s Harris County. With 397 ambulance companies, it has more than 10 times the number of companies in Dallas County and in San Antonio’s Bexar County. Those Harris County companies operate 1,000 ambulances, grossly outnumbering the 100 ambulances operated by the Houston Fire Department, she found.
